6th Street Townhouse by StudioSmith

The Washington, DC-based firm StudioSmith gave this historic townhouse a modern renovation. What was once a small, dark, and deteriorated space with a poor functioning layout became a much more open and light-filled space. Rethinking the layout and installing a wall of windows visually help make the most of the small amount of square feet in the home. The back wall is now composed primarily of windows to maximize the amount of light throughout the space. Brick that was removed from the house’s rear wall was used to construct the new patio and planting beds.

The townhouse also features a basement apartment that can easily be connected to the main living space in the future due to the original staircase that remained. Both spaces use high efficiency heating, cooling, and plumbing systems.
