A Modern Lake House in Western Massachusetts

Located on the edge of a lake in Western Massachusetts, Lake House, designed by Taylor and Miller Architecture and Design, appears sculptural and abstract from the street, while from the lake side it opens up to focus on the view. A stacked wood wall doubles as a retaining wall for the landscape and as the main enclosure of the house, which is partially embedded into the land.

The wooden wall is broken up windows and doors that are surrounded by angular white frames, called sleeves. The horizontal sleeves face towards the lake focusing on the views, while the vertical sleeves look up towards the sky.

The kitchen is outfitted with hot-rolled steel giving it a uniform, industrial look.

On the walls going up the stairs, they used rusted steel.
