A Stool Inspired By Japanese Folklore

According to Japanese folklore, a tree is the link between the heavens above and the ground below. Inspired by this thought and Japanese carpentry, The Twig Co. designed the minimalistic Kyoto Stool made from only a single piece of lumber.

From a large piece of wood, two dovetail keys, a branching base, and a bookmatched (a mirrored design on the wood surface) seat are dissected, hand-planed, and shaped. Through this method, there is minimal waste and an object from a simple design is created. Once the stool has been assembled, it relies partially on the user for added stability, a symbolism of nature and man working together.
