This birdhouse-shaped treehouse designed by Nendo houses two birds with one stone.

Designed for the Momofuku Ando Center, a facility devoted to promoting and increasing access to nature activities, this bird apartment houses a person and also acts as collective housing for birds. One one side, the treehouse has 78 nest spaces for birds to make their home and one the other side, there is one entrance for a human. Just pop this birds nest bed inside and your aviary apartment is complete!

I hate to rain on the parade, but coming from the ecological perspective, there are very few species of birds that will use a colonial nesting set-up like the one shown. Most species will set-up a territory around their nest that they will defend against con-specifics. Unless this design is installed with one of those colonial nesting species in mind and in an appropriate habitat for that species, this is a non-functional design.
I love many of the designs that you post on this blog and I think many of them do an excellent job of showing how effective conservation and good design can work hand-in-hand. I just worry when I see designs like this one which make it seem like they serve a useful ecological function when in reality that is highly unlikely.

I was confused at first but now I love it. Great idea. Great design. Think I’d use it as a meditation space.
