Between Centers by Jorge de la Cruz

Spanish designer Jorge de la Cruz has a new series of wooden furniture developed from its production system: wood turning between centers.

Consisting of a stool, a banquette and a table in either maple wood or black-dyed birch wood, the series reminds me of those long, roller belts in airport security.

The process of turning wood uses a lathe to create shapes through quick revolutions or rotations. As the designer explains, this process produces a symbol, or sign, on the end of each piece created by the “drive center” and “dead center,” which press the piece of wood to rotate it. Woodworkers usually remove these symbols but de la Cruz has decided to keep them and use them in the design as a reminder of the process.

This collection was presented at Zona Ventosa during Dutch Design Week 2012.
