Born in 1935 in New Zealand, Bill Culbert lives between London and France where he has become a widely known artist working with light. He was trained as painter but in the late 1960s he began to feel the constraints of working in that medium. He saw working with light as an extension beyond the limitations that canvas brought. He incorporates lighting and fluorescent tubes along with found objects like lampshades, plastic bottles, and suitcases and brings the viewer’s attention to the light and shadows that they create.
