Blurred Limits: Marc Thorpe for Moroso

Moroso opened its New York showroom for an exclusive presentation of American architect and designer Marc Thorpe’s exhibition, Blurred Limits. As part of the exhibition, Thorpe’s pieces that are currently in production by Moroso, along with prototypes and limited edition pieces that will be making their international debut will be on display. The exhibition showcases the shared views of both designer and manufacturer “to push the limits of technology, material, form and space.”

The Blur Sofa makes its US debut with material that is meant to look as if it has disappeared. Using fabric knitting, a new technique, the material appears in an integrated gradient pattern which suggests dissolving, fading, or, hence the name, blurring. The sofa tricks the eye and makes one feel uncertain of its size and shape.

Ratio, making its limited edition premiere for Moroso, is part game, part table. The design invites the owner to move the pieces to create their own unique table. Ratio starts as a platonic square with the individual pieces being cut at 45 degrees that allow for endless configurations depending on your space.

The Morning Glory Table is a prototype that’s also making its international premiere in NYC, ahead of its debut in April 2014 in Milan. Inspired by the morning glory whose vine grows and wraps around itself creating strength, the table design is similar and spreads its leaves into a canopy of surfaces. Each table features three stems connected at the base and the design is meant to be displayed in clusters to mimic the look of an actual vine.

The Mark Table, designed by Thorpe in 2010, was his first collaboration with Moroso. The minimal design is meant to be pulled up next to or up over the seat of a sofa or chair, making everything you place on its tabletop easily within reach.
