Designer Brad Ascalon recently partnered up with Swedish furniture house Mitab to produce the Caslon sofa collection. Marking Mitab’s first collaboration with an American design studio, the collection all began thanks to inspiration from the typeface that bears its name. The font itself is both hard and soft, but overall its form fosters a pure simplicity. The sofa is much the same – simple at first glance, but further inspection leads to noticeable details like the stitching, the angles, and the treatment of the upholstery.
Ascalon’s goal was, “to create both tension and balance between the hard and the soft, and to meld two dichotomies into one.” He clearly achieved that in this understated collection. The design is stripped of the flashy bells and whistles, like tufting, exposed legs, etc., and left with a beautiful and solid design that will work just about anywhere.
