
Architect Michael Ferguson of Space International has designed retail environments for Nike and Kitson, masterfully re-envisioned mid century masterpieces by Schindler, Buff & Hensman, as well as Thorton Abel, and created contemporary residences throughout the Los Angeles area. Currently, the studio is developing a new retail concept for UCLA’s Student Union. In this week’s Friday Five, Ferguson expounds on his city, Los Angeles. He says, “It’s a complicated urban form with a number of contradictions. Part dystopian infrastructure, part Elysian dream, our city (like our work) has a form of brutal elegance which one can only find if they know how to look in the right places.” Here are some of his favorite “Elegant Brutalisms” from the city that shapes them.

Completed by the end of this month, APOLLO Architects have designed their newest building in Kitayama-cho, Fuchu, Tokyo called Ring. The location is in the quiet outskirts of Tokyo, and the clients are a husband and wife who work as teachers in a nearby private school.

Located in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, the Belvedere Residence occupies a majority of the flat lot it sits on. It was designed by Anastasia Arquitetos to blend the indoor/outdoor areas seamlessly and to create an expansive feel. The design of the house is rectangular in shape and divided between two levels to give the feeling of more space.

denieuwegeneratie is a small Amsterdam-based design firm with three young designers. They designed this partially buried home, built into the landscape of a nature reserve in The Netherlands. It emerges from the hill on two sides with large glass fronts framed in lark wood. Dutch Mountain was embedded into the artificial hill to both camouflage and act as thermal insulation for the house.

Italian architect Simone Micheli designed this space in Florence, Italy for himself and his family. With the use of 90% environmentally friendly materials, the project represents “Ethical Luxury” which is something that he brings to all of his architectural projects. His goal was to create a large open space that symbolizes freedom and movement with the hope of stirring one’s senses through color, shapes, and materials.
