Well, hello there. Our kitchen renovation has been complete now for about a month. We installed some new track lighting and added dimmers, so now all that’s left is for us to start cooking! And that’s exactly what we’ve been trying to do. Trying being the key word here, as neither one of us is all that talented when it comes to the kitchen. I can boil a mean pasta, but that’s about it. I told Electrolux that no appliance was going to help me become a better cook, but I’m eating my words now — literally.

Many of you had asked me at the beginning of this project to tell you more about our appliances, so here you go! Our kitchen is equipped with Professional Series Electrolux ICON® appliances, and I’ve just been completely schooled on them all, so I feel like I can adequately talk about their features and my experience with them.

Creative people need creative spaces. This is something I’ve explored at length in my own blog and we’ve started looking at here in the new Where I Work column, so it was really exciting to see so much new and innovative furniture for the working environment at the Stockholm Furniture Fair.

When I first heard about the YLighting Marcel Wanders Pattern Play contest I thought it was such a great idea. We all know Marcel Wanders is famous not only for his designs but the intricate patterns that he uses in his work. In fact, he designed some to be used as tattoos last year!

This time, he partnered with YLighting and offered the pattern from his Can Can Pendant for FLOS and they asked designers to use the pattern in unexpected and interesting ways. The contest was open to designers from all over the world, and hundreds of submissions were gathered. The winner — Gregory Van Horn from Los Angeles — received $2,500 and a Can Can light! After seeing how creative the submissions were, I thought it would be fun to look at the top designs that came out of the contest.

Poul Henningsen (1894-1967) was a Danish designer who is world renown for his beautiful and functional PH lamps. He was the illegitimate child of the famous Danish writer and feminist activist Agnes Henningsen.
All of Henningsen’s lamps are designed to break and filter the light in a pleasing way, with his most famous designs being the Artichoke and the PH5.
A few crazy Henningsen facts:

Fabrica worked with seven designers to re-interpret the foldable wooden cabin structure. The origin of this pop-up movable structure is unknown, but it is thought that these cabins began as fishing tents to protect fisherman from the elements. Inside its temporary walls, one finds not only shelter but a place for reflection, perhaps. The designers’ interpretations of the cabin marry the traditional quality of simple life with a more complex contemporary existence.

Soft Fold is a temporary space which invites the users to take time out of their day. Duvets, a reading table, a low bench and a lamp compose this hybrid furniture/space. The harmony of colors emphasizes this soft and quiet atmosphere.
