Arper has long been one of my favorite Italian design companies because of their consistency and simple modernism. With the introduction of new products in Milan 2013 this year, they surprised me with their colorful upholstery and whimsical wall storage.

A selection of nice, graphic-driven designs to complement the rest of this collection.

But that’s not all. I’m very excited to announce that Arper will exhibit for the first time at Neocon in Chicago June 10th-12th with a new permanent exhibition space at the Merchandise Mart. Go visit them at Space #339 on the 3rd Floor!

Spruce up an old piece of furniture by using Sherwin-Williams Chip It! to draw inspiration from a piece of artwork.

I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am to share this post with you. I love finding new little tricks and programs that help ease through the creative process, and Sherwin-Williams’ Chip It! is one of them.

Lately I’ve been looking to inject a little color into my home, but wasn’t sure in what direction I should go. I knew I wanted to paint this dark, weighty bookcase to lighten up a drab corner of my house – it’s a nice piece, but not helping my situation. From there, I needed a little help.

I started with what I have: a lot of chunky woven textures, and a very neutral palette. That immediately brought to mind the work of New Friends – a collaboration between Alexandra Segreti of Weird Friends and Kelly Rakowski of Nothing Is New. Together they create graphic weavings that are true works of art.

I scrolled down their website and came across this piece:

Bingo – it perfectly captured where I wanted to go. The palette had the same tans, grays and whites that already exist in my interior, but with a pop of bright pink that would bring a little life into the room.

From there, it was a piece of cake: I uploaded the image to Chip It!, which matched the colors in the photo to Sherwin-Williams paints. Chip It! suggested 10 colors from the photo, which I then dragged and dropped to create a 5-color Chip Card. There’s even an option to tag your Chip Card, if you’re an organization nut like me.

You can then print your Chip Card to bring to your local Sherwin-Williams, but I just accessed the Chip It! website from my smartphone while I was at the store. The Sherwin-Williams staff was unbelievably helpful and even assisted me in choosing the right paint finishes and supplies: eggshell for the base coat, high-gloss to make the pink really stand out, and semi-gloss for the rest.

Once I was home, I started by painting the entire bookcase in a base coat of Extra White (SW 7006). I then taped off and painted small sections with the remaining colors until I felt it was evocative of the New Friends work I used as inspiration.

I’ll admit it, I love WordPress. That’s what we use here on Design Milk and that’s what I’ve been using for the past seven years. So when I finally decided that I wanted to launch a personal website, I didn’t even think twice before using WordPress. However, the thing about WordPress is that it’s just a shell, which is great when you’re building a complex site, but not always ideal when you want something simple. You have to customize and add plugins for just about every little thing you want, and some plugins don’t work with this version or this plugin and so on. There are 500 million website templates to choose from but from experience, many of them are not easy enough to customize and most are a CSS nightmare. Plus, you have to upgrade versions every 3 months. I do it all day every day here with Design Milk, and honestly, it’s tiring. The last thing I want to do after dealing with WordPress all day long is spend my entire evening trying to figure out why this plugin isn’t working correctly or where to change that font in the CSS file. All I want was something super duper simple. I want to drag and drop. I want WYSIWYGs for everything. I want built-in galleries and e-commerce. So I emailed Squarespace to help me get set up with an account.

Squarespace has been a great partner to us at Design Milk showcasing how beautiful their templates are and their latest features. So why not put my money where my mouth is and try them out for my own site. My personal website isn’t a blog so much as it’s a portfolio site for my artwork, and what I liked immediately was that there are gallery options built right into every template.

It was really easy to import my WordPress site that I had started a few months ago, but of course there were things I had to manually re-upload since I had been using custom gallery plugins. But by re-upload, I really mean just dragging and dropping: no formatting or inserting necessary.

I find Squarespace very intuitive to use and I haven’t had to look anything up except maybe a few custom CSS items. Because I’m so anal-retentive, I knew that an out-of-the-box solution wouldn’t be 100% perfect for me and that I’d have to tweak a few things. However, the solutions were easy to find and implement. I didn’t have to install any plugins or worry about finding code locations or anything like that. I’m also pretty excited to get started with the Commerce functionality.

I noticed that sometimes, there’s the occasional crash, freeze or loading issue. But that’ll happen with shared hosting anywhere, and overall I can’t say really say too many bad things about it. I’ll let you know more about my experience as time goes on.

Overall, I’m really happy with the way everything turned out and I’m looking forward to people (other than my mom) visiting my site. So go look!

Then, try Squarespace for free for 14 days right here.

Full disclosure: Squarespace provided me with an account gratis, but I would totally have paid for it!

We talk to Aurelie Tu, founder of Craftedsystems, about her gorgeous textured felt vessels and where she finds inspiration.

We collaborated with MSN to profile four artists and designers we love who we think embody the same design, content and functional philosophies as the new MSN.com: design with fierce reductionism, sharing real-time trends, and being perfect for touch. We think you’ll love learning more about these four creatives. Experience their work here, and check out the all-new MSN here.

I could not be more excited to talk to Aurelie Tu. Not only do I admire what she’s doing with Craftedsystems, but I can’t get enough of the gorgeous texture of her designs, patterns and wall panels. Her soft, textured vessels beg to be touched and played with rather than just looked at. And while they might not be visually reductionist, they are definitely reductionist in nature—from the lack of tools and glues needed and the material waste used to make the vessels. Here’s what she had to say when I spoke with her:

Your background is in industrial design, creating primarily tech devices, so how did you end up designing soft, felted products?

My entire career has revolved around design of technology for consumers. While consulting in Los Angeles, I designed numerous consumer electronic products like laptop computers, computer peripherals, desktop printers, projection TVs, speakers and consumer personal care appliances. While at Nike, I was in charge of all the women’s wearable electronic products from timing/vision/tech, including digital sport watches, sport audio players & accessories, heart rate monitors, sport performance and sport culture eyewear. This work is exciting in that it solves real problems for specific consumers, and with increasingly sophisticated materials/processes, one can explore boundless opportunity for solutions. The one element I felt was missing, however, was the organic component, the natural and tactile qualities of materials, and a human touch.

How did Craftedsystems begin?

Crafted began as an experiment with an alternate business model. At its core is using design and handwork in helping others, working with and for local communities, and using design/production as a means for betterment. This contrasts starkly from making/selling traditional craftwork or appropriating ethnic cultures’ work and selling it locally. I created a system of weaving which is easy for anyone to do, doesn’t require particular skill, and is intended to be done in groups. The pay is a very good wage paid per piece; thus it is incentive-driven, and not hourly, which is even more satisfying once the skill is learned and one wants to weave more and also be paid more. The weaving itself is often called “healing handwork”; doing something creative and repetitive which produces a tangible result, and is a modern form of therapy for those in difficult circumstances. I collaborate with two local organizations for production which have both been amazing to work with; the YWCA and P:EAR, a homeless youth (15-24) organization in Portland focussed on creativity and art.

How did you come up with the specific interlocking patterns for Craftedsystems? What is the process of creating a piece look like?

Craftedsystems is a forum for experimentation. My intent was to create something using technological/design innovation aligned with handcraft. The first products I created were from felt, and they involve a very simple system of slots and tongues whereby the felt locks into itself without need for stitching or mechanical fasteners. I also turned the system inside out, so that the part people normally wouldn’t want to look at becomes the visual identity for the product line. The process is simply an interative process of creating new geometries and patterns, and seeing which ones are simple to produce and result in an aesthetically pleasing form.

When you made your the first Craftedsystems pieces, why was felt your choice of material?

I selected felt for its inherent organic quality; felt is made from pressed wool, and was the very first textile man ever created. Its beautiful thickness and solidity was what attracted me to it; it is both solid and surface simultaneously. The fact it could be structural and flexible is what intrigued me to vessels and voids.

There’s something about your work that makes one want to reach out and touch it – to feel the texture and try and understand how all the pieces fit together. Was this intentional?

This is perhaps resultant of the fact I wanted to incorporate handcraft as a distinct design element; the fact that no machine could produce what these people are able to weave.

How does Craftedsystems reflect your own personal style?

I suppose it combines several elements of my own personal style, although that wasn’t intentional at all. I am passionate about modern design, innovation and technology, but also have a deep affinity for materials and textures, and I love both crisp geometries and flowing organic forms.

You’re an avid traveler… is this where most of your inspiration comes from? Tell me more about where these patterns and shapes come from.

Travel for me is an essential part of experience outside your sphere of comfort; being exposed to ideas and philosophies which are different from your own is creatively expanding, which I believe feeds the richness of one’s ideas. The patterns I use, however, tend to be more geometric and elemental in nature, and may be coincidental in reference but in substance probably extend more from modern design or natural geometries (like fibonacci sequence) than from a specific cultural root.

Which Craftedsystems work is your favorite? Why?

My favorite is the Asira [pictured below], which is now being produced by Ligne Roset in France, who, by the way, has reorganized their production line to utilize waste material from their furniture lines, and to specifically employ people with disabilities for the handweaving process.

Asira series.
What are you currently working on?

I’m in the process of creating another series of wallhangings for Room & Board, as well as a series of vessels for their collection also.

What’s next?

I’m looking at different combinations of materials for some hybridization of material/form for future projects. We’re also hoping to work on more collaborations with Room & Board and other partners as well.

The Art of Clean Up: Life Made Neat and Tidy, by Ursus Wehrli, is a recent release from Chronicle Books and, boy, does it appeal to my inner anal-retentive OCDness. Mr. Wehrli takes “messy” things, things that we don’t usually look at and consider to be in disarray, and rearranges them in beautiful, organized order. Have you ever wondered how many As or Bs there were in an average bowl of alphabet soup? Or the ratio of ketchup to your fries? You’re about to find out:

We talked to Mr. Wehrli about his new book to find out what drives him to clean things up:

I hear you’re actually not as anal-retentive or as obsessive as we might think. Is this true?

Yes, that’s true, I’m afraid to say. I know some people are disappointed that this Mr. Wehrli is not suffering from OCD or a similar disease. However, I can get quite obsessive when it comes to an idea that I want to carry out. I drive my friends crazy if I have an artistic idea in mind. I’m only happy when it’s done.

How did you get started “arranging” things neatly?

I’ve always been interested in looking at things differently and turning things upside down. First, I started looking closely at modern art. I copied some famous paintings and put all the different forms, shapes, and colors in another place on the canvas. Then, I started to tidy up all the objects in the paintings and arranged them in a new way.

For example, I collected all the different squares in a modern painting and piled them up. The green ones in one pile, the red ones in another, and so on. What came out were fascinating new pictures. So my first books were about tidying up art. After that I began to devote myself more to everyday situations and I tidied up parking lots, fruit salads, and a lot of other messy things.

Was there one particular project that proved to be extremely challenging to tidy up?

Of course, there were a few. The parking lot, for example, took me a while. And the sunbathers. All the pictures with a lot of people involved were particularly strenuous. But fortunately I had a few people supporting me. A lot of planning was needed to get some of them done.

I didn’t get to finish my ultimate project, though: tidying up the Swiss Alps. That would be quite ambitious. I could rearrange them by size, perhaps. I’m still working on that one. Granted, the best way to make the Swiss Alps really tidy would be to iron them flat…

Before

Process

You must be a very patient person. How long does tidying up for one of your photographs take? Are there moments of frustration?

No, there are no moments of frustration—tidying up is usually quite satisfying.

Some ideas seem amazing when they first come to my mind but they turn out to be not quite as great as I had hoped. But that’s part of the process. Before I go for the real thing I start by doing sketches and drawings. Normally you see right away if an idea looks great or if it’s better to keep it in the drawer.

What do you hope people will get from your photographs?

There’s no moral or purpose behind my work. People see in my work what they like to see. And that’s ok. If my work supports the fact that our world needs both chaos and order, even better. We need both poles. It’s the balance that makes life worth living. It’s a way to learn to enjoy to look differently at our everyday world.

If you could live in a world of “before” photos or “after” photos, which would you choose + why?

Good question, and it’s not easy to answer. I normally prefer the chaos if it gets too tidy, and vice versa.

Normally you expect a comedy-minded artist to take something that is straight and turn it into a mess. What I do is exactly the same, but only the opposite. I love to question the prevailing state. So, when in doubt, I would go for – the opposite!

I discovered the work of Thomas Wold back in 2007. Since then, I’ve been following his work closely and he always seems to surprise me. From his amazing kitchen cabinetry to his playful storage to office spaces, I can’t find fault with anything he does. And to top it all off, he’s so nice!

Since 2007, I’ve always wanted to find out more about his inspiration so we went to San Francisco to visit his studio and talk to him. His work is mostly storage based, therefore, his pieces often feature a variety of doors. The desire to find out what’s behind a doorway—that childlike curiosity that is inside all of us—is what he seeks to recreate in his work, much like the way MSN has focused on our innate desire to touch and interact in their latest redesign.

Thomas explains, “Even though my work deals with a lot of elements, a lot of motifs and shapes and colors, in the end, they’re all refined down to express one idea.” He makes all of these elements come together in one connected piece in a way that I have seen fail with other designers. His ability to take a variety of different parts and build them into cohesive whole is a true talent. I hope you enjoy watching!

© Aakash Nihalani

The art of Aakash Nihalani was brought to my attention earlier this year and I’ve been hooked on his work ever since. The New York-born, Jersey-raised, Brooklyn-based artist initially went to school for political science but ended up finding his calling early, finishing with a BFA. “I had creative inclinations as a kid but art as a career wasn’t an option the way I was brought up. Instead I was steered towards professions like law or medicine. When I did switch to art, I think being an outsider gave me a fresh perspective on what art was, or could be, which allowed me to experiment freely,” he explains. We’re so glad he pursued those early creative inclinations!

© Aakash Nihalani

Building cubes, rectangles and other shapes out of mostly tape, the very nature of his work seems simple at first, but he builds complexity through perspective and dimension, a trait of his work that I think really embodies MSN’s design philosophy of fierce reductionism. He currently installs his mind-bending art all over New York City, as well as overseas in India, France and beyond, turning places like alleyways and parks into visual playgrounds. Like MSN, in much of his work, Nihalani creates projects that are “perfect for touch” and require human or object interaction, like Nature Walk or Sum Times. I often hope when I’m in NYC that I am lucky enough to stumble upon one of his installations.

The fact that some of his artwork is taken down within days–or even hours–of being installed, shows a real commitment to staying in the moment. He establishes more permanence with exhibitions as well as a pretty eye-explosive blog called Eye Scream Sunday. I got a chance to speak with him and see what he’s up to – read the interview below:

When did you start playing around with 3D shapes – did you start drawing them first? How did it all come about?

I took a bunch of printmaking classes when I first got into art school. I gravitated toward screen-printing, probably because it was less tedious than other printing methods like litho or etching, and I was able to print quickly.

Coming from a suburban neighborhood, I was struck by the urban architecture of the city: big boxes, filled with smaller boxes.

Early on I started exposing screens with graphics of cubes. I would print hundreds of them individually on different papers, cut them out, and then arrange them into different compositions. I obsessed over the shape, it always seemed like it deserved more time and exploration in the way it could repeat and interact with itself.

For your street installations, do you typically look for a space first or do you create the work first and then scout a location?

I walk until I find a space that catches my eye. If the space isn’t conducive to having tape directly on it, I’ll go back to the studio and make a freestanding version of the design by taping onto a corrugated board and then cutting it out. Problem solving a piece into a specific location becomes a fun challenge, and I find satisfaction in having a dialogue with the environment and people in it.

Your work is very simplistic and yet there are complex spatial and dimensional aspects to it. Would you consider yourself a minimalist or a maximalist?

Minimalist. I work towards using the least in order to achieve the most.

What made you decide to use tape as a medium? Do you have a favorite medium?

I came upon tape as a medium sort of by accident. I had a painter’s roll that I was using to stick some screen prints on wall for a student exhibition. There was a pedestal in the space that was casting a shadow on the floor that matched the shapes I was using in my prints, so I outlined the shadow with the tape. Clouds parted…

I was always really attracted to making work in public spaces and once I started using tape, I felt comfortable in working outdoors with it since it was such a non-threatening material. Also, tape by nature makes straight lines and because all my work is linear, I’m able to work with the medium instead of against it.

Does your art reflect your own personal style?

I have obsessive-compulsive tendencies so the aesthetic comes out as ordered and structural. I also think my sense of humor comes out in my work.

Where do you draw influence?

A series of window panes that make a math equation, a stop sign set against industrial Brooklyn architecture, a violinist playing on the subway platform, a patch of exposed brick on a concrete wall, a vine growing in the shape of a waterfall, pyramids of stacked fruit at the corner stand, discolored tiles on the train station down the block.

What is your process like?

I like moving back and forth between mediums to keep things interesting. I find that work I do in one medium, like animation, can inform or expand the things I can create or conceive of in another medium, like painting or sculpture. I’m always finding new ways to express an idea, so my process is still evolving.

Your work is interactive. Whether it’s moving (like an animated gif) or installed on the street, it beckons you to interact with it in some way. Is this magnetism and interaction part of the works as well?

Most of my work is only complete, or successful, when that interaction happens.

I became frustrated making work in studios, then packing it up and hiding it in storage until I could find a way to exhibit it. Working outdoors allows me to close the gap between creation and exhibition, which, for me, brings the process back to life.

What are you currently working on?

I’m working with MTA Arts in Transit and Two Trees on a large installation at the York Street Station in Brooklyn. What’s next? Getting back in the studio to work on a solo show in Berlin later this year. Stay tuned!

What do you want to be best known for? How will you leave your mark?

My marks usually get torn down after a couple weeks.
