Oh 3D printing, your wonders never cease to amaze! The things that those printers can do (like make Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures album cover come to life) is truly mind-blowing, and with people like Kevin Spencerat the helm, I’m pretty sure anything can be made. Take this mini Eames Lounge Chair that is achieved through 3D color printing. It’s a 1/20 scale miniature that will make any design loving fanatic super excited.

The chair stands about 2″ tall and would be perfect to sit on your desk. The best part is that you can get your very own for $25!

There’s always a trend or two that becomes quickly evident during ICFF and NYCxDesign and this year there were a few trends that seemed leftover from last year: marble, stone, brass and copper. But this year, we noticed another trend: color. Green, specifically, followed by yellows and jewel tones. We wonder if maybe this has anything to do with the PANTONE color of the year being Emerald…

Although this is just a small selection of pieces that we saw in this color family, the NYCxDesign color story here is pretty evident when you put all these photos together and create a palette:

Spot on trend. IKEA’s Stockholm collection hit the nail right on the head in terms of color story trend. This photo and collection pretty much sums up the entire show. Bravo, IKEA.

Leave it to design genius Philippe Starck to create a lounge system that’s built for not only comfort, but staying connected as well. Italian furniture manufacturer Cassina had asked him to design a sofa many years before but he always saw the sofa as “obsolete.” Now, he sees them as a necessity for the changing world where leisure time is just as important as work, especially for those with more flexibility between the office and home. Partnering on the MyWorld collection brought Cassina’s level of high quality and impeccable taste together with Starck’s razor sharp design aesthetic, to create a modular seating system that could work for anyone.

From Starck:

“We live in a schizophrenic society. Let’s assume that. MyWorld is a cocoon, a nest, a world where we can be egocentric and comfortably commune with our own shadow or collect some snatches of news from the world, that is said to be real.”

MyWorld is available in a two-seater sofa, a three-seater sofa, an armchair, a chaise lounge, and pouf with two incorporated drawers. There are also tables, both side surfaces and freestanding, and box-cupboards that slide out. Screens are available to create privacy and definition around the sofa.

We all lead different lives and one sofa doesn’t fit all. This unique system allows you to adapt various aspect to your own needs, like relaxing, conversing, eating and drinking, working, or whatever. The pieces can be grouped together and accessories can be added on to make it work for you. The system even incorporates an electrical charging station, a USB charger, and a Duracell Powermat wireless charging solution all hidden within the box-cupboard, so you can continue to work while powering up your devices.

The August Smart Lock is a new lock and access system, designed by Yves Behar’s fuseproject in partnership with Jason Johnson, that will change the way you, your house guests, and visitors enter your house. Gone are the annoying house keys that you have to fumble for when your hands are full or the key you have to give to your house cleaners – they’re replaced with a virtual key that you can send to people you want to give access to, all via your phone.

August Smart Lock works with your existing deadbolts and the brilliant thing about it is that your virtual key can never be copied. You can grant certain people access for specific periods of time and then disable it when you want to. Being the homeowner, the device recognizes you when you get to the door and automatically unlocks it for you without you even having to pull your phone out of your pocket.

Using a Bluetooth LE connection with your smartphone to lock and unlock the door, August is installed right over the deadbolt. It works even if the power is off or your WiFi is down.

Keeping creativity at the forefront, Vandeyk has designed a number of bikes all built by hand. The design team takes a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach to build performance bikes that are functional pieces of art.

The Machine for Riding is the design house’s latest collection that uses Ralf Brand’s (Formula One proven engineer) expertise to craft a carbon fiber beauty. The idea was to combine form and function into a spiritual experience for the rider and the road.

The cycle boasts a crisp, minimal design that has a carbon fiber frame. All of the parts used throughout the design follow the same design ‘code’, which makes for a bike with precise and well thought out details.

The best part of the bike is that the frame is all one piece. As a plus, it comes in at just under two pounds!

People are 3D printing everything right now. They’re working on food, jewelry, architecture, cars, clothing, and even guns (yikes). But who cares about that stuff when you can 3D print your own cover of Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures?

Interaction Design Professor at Hof University Michael Zöllner has created his own 3D Printed Joy Division cover, but the best part is that he’s posted the file for download in MakerBot’s Thingiverse so that you can make your very own copy, too.

The iconic cover art was created in 1979 by Graphic designer Peter Saville. It is the visual depiction of the first pulsar signal ever recorded. Watch a great video with Peter where he talks about the explosion of the image as a part of pop culture history. “It’s the endless interpretations of this diagram that make it so powerful.”

Back in 1962, drum teacher Jim Marshall opened up a small music shop in London. Fast-forward to now, his shop has morphed into the iconic global brand, Marshall. The company is known for their awesome amps that churn out their signature Marshall “crunch.”

The Marshall Fridge is the company’s way of bringing the essence of their amps to any pad—no guitar skills necessary. You get Marshall’s classic style—in refrigerator form—that stores sodas or ice-cold beers (Gin, for me).

It’s made from materials that Marshall often turns to for their amps including authentic logos, brass control panels, and fret cloth. It also has a small freezer, interior lighting, and tempered etched glass shelves.

You’ll even save a few bucks on the energy bill since it has an A+ energy consumption rating. Now, that’s what I’m talking about!

Dock Tray is a minimalist design created by Belgium-based designer Alain Berteau for Objekten. The design was presented at this year’s International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York City. Objekten displayed its newest and greatest designs including this multifunctional accessory made for the iPad. Objekten produces its products in Europe, and is designed by well-known industrial designers such as Lehanneur, Willenz, and Berteau.

The focus on Objekten is to utilize quality materials while being aware of the shipping and manufacturing processes. With that said, Dock Tray is constructed of varnished natural oak or dark stained oak sourced directly from harvested forests in Germany. The multifunctional aspect of the design is unique in that an iPad, or similar digital device, can be propped upward by the indented crevices on all four sides, or also laid flat and flush with the border of the tray.

The iPad can be propped either vertically or horizontally, depending on which side of the tray is being used. The designer has also allotted additional storage in the middle of the tray to allow users to place phones, wallets, and other small accessories. As an advocate of minimalism, I truly love how simple yet functional a design such as this can be.

Knock Knock is a playful calculator made for children by designer Khalil Klouche. The interactive wooden box lets you “knock” out math problems by using the standard arithmetic symbols displayed on the device. Using an Arduino board, contact microphones, and solenoids, you “knock” the math problem and it sounds the answer back to you.

For example, say you want to subtract two from a number, you knock the ‘minus’ symbol two times and it will then give you the answer in a knocking sound.

Lenovo teamed up with three design teams to create collaborative table stations for their IdeaCentre Horizon Table PC. The idea was that because their high-concept PC created a real-life togetherness and technology, that it would be fun to fuse form and function to showcase the possibilities and use of this type of computer.
