Chris Ruhland is recent graduate of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design with a degree in Furniture Design. He also collaborated with Steven Mullenbach on the orange chair we featured last week.
Chris’ philosophy:
I’m constantly evolving my definition of furniture as art by maintaining a sense of fun and whimsy. I try to challenge the ideas of what icons like the chair and table can be through proportional abstractions, shape, and form. By changing a single part of an object you can completely change the use and context it is seen in; a chair can become a table and visa versa. It is said that form follows function but how can you manipulate this as an artist. Through my proportional, material, and color choices I am challenging this convention.
