A big trend over the past five years has been cities and maps. From map-themed textiles to city jewelry and typographic maps, it’s a trend I suspect we won’t see going away any time soon.

Brazilian designer Renata Rubim has released a fantastic new tile design called City, which was created for Solarium flooring and coating. The tiles feature an aerial view of a city, complete with streets and circuits — like you might see from a plane or a map. The graphic design is modern and simple, yet when repeated, the tiles appear to create a metropolis. You can move the tiles around, too, to customize the look.

Made from a special type of refractory concrete for floors, it claims to offer more durability compared with other materials and natural stone. I’m really digging it!

Very different! I like! The fourth composition example gives the tiles a bit of a kaleidoscope effect — unexpected!

With me being a tiler, I have yet to come across a job where I have had to install a magnificent tile like this. I love the idea of a city on a floor.
