I would totally make one (or buy one if they're for sale), it is quite poignant on waste but totally cool.

Oh come on, Nichole... don't be so quick to dismiss those who critic as whiners. Oftentimes we have valid reasons to do so.

Yes this chair is aesthetically pleasing, playful and creative, but I very much agree with what Steve said. The problem here is not whether the chair is functional or not.

The designer or whoever claims the chair to be a 'comment on the disposable culture of our society'. But like what Steve said, if the chair is made out of new straws and not used ones that have been reused, wouldn't that logically defeat the purpose? There have been quite a lot of pretentious designs that disguise under 'eco-friendliness' just to make them more appealing and saleable. What do they take us for, gullible art enthusiasts?

But of course, having said all that, if Scott Jarvie's Clutch Chair is indeed made out of recycled straws, I sincerely applaud him and look forward to what other things he can come out with through recycling.

Stop whining! It is aesthetically pleasing... playful and creative.. or re-creative I should say. If it was made just to be a work of art, and not a functional chair, than it IS functional.

No, not a COMMENT on the disposable culture of our society.

It is an EXAMPLE of the disposable culture of our society. If this is made of new straws, not used ones dug from the trash, then you are just adding to the waste by making a non-functional object from new plastic.
