Coleraine Residence by Naturehumaine

Coleraine Residence is a minimalist house located in Montreal designed by Naturehumaine. The project was completed for a real estate developer on the corner of a quaint residential neighborhood. One of the major impediments of the project was maintaining the two-row house requirement on an 8.7-meter lot without sacrificing natural lighting.

The solution was intertwining the units by creating a zig-zag dynamic between the subdivisions, which maximized sunlight exposure while creating a unique and intimate space. The two units, which intersect at the top floor, create a comfortable and cozy program that coalesce the master bedroom, office, and terrace within each unit. This distinctive program was further reinforced by the site’s footprint, which has a 75-degree angle at the intersecting streets.

In order to remain consistent with the neighborhood’s vernacular, the home was constructed with a brick base, with the only deviation being the contemporary steel volume on the top level. The double-height interiors are suspended via a wooden platform that are matched with the flooring and staircase.
