Copper Cookware

Copper Cookware

I’ve been craving new cookware from some time now and I was recently thinking how rustic and homey copper cookware looks. I bet it would make a lovely statement in a modern kitchen.

  1. Not only does it look fantastic but I also heard its the best for cooking. Copper is a much better conductor of electricity and heat than aluminum.

  2. Reccomend against. Copper is an OK idea in a sandwiched ‘heat spreader’ type of layer at the bottom of a general cooking vessel, or for special applications (reacts favorably with egg whites when whipping up a merengue), but the possibility of copper toxicity should drive you back to using steel for your general cookware. also, they will look like utter garbage after a while, unless you want to be busting out the brasso all of the time.

  3. But isn’t copper impossible to keep looking good and hard to clean?

  4. @Carley – maybe, but it’s SO pretty!!! Can you tell I don’t cook??

  5. While the copper set is very good looking, there are some issues to consider. Toxocity is one issue when cooking high acid foods. Cleaning and polishing is another (can be managed however). So perhaps the better approach is to get a few pieces to show off i the kitchen and to also have some other items to use such as a cast iron pot for stewing, stainless steel for general purpose and maybe a Green Pan for eggs and omelettes. And be sure to shop for your copper cookware as it is expensive but good deals can be found online.

I can totally tell none of you cook! Copper pans are lined with tin or other non-toxic metal so that copper does not poison you when cooking. You want copper pots for the beauty as well as the excellent heat conductivity. Even the top-rated stainless steel pots wil include some copper to increase and stabilize the heat conductivity.

If you use yout pots regularly, just like real silverware, they tarnish less. If you want a less toxic way and cheap way to clean the pots try a baking soda paste or even toothpaste (not gel).
