Tables by John Beck Steel

We’ve featured John Beck before on Design Milk, and we think his handiwork is quite impressive. We asked him to show us some parts of the process in creating one of his one-of-a-kind tables.

The tables shown are coffee tables (48″ x 48″ x 16″) that are all steel, with a very new exception. The interior supports are made from all reclaimed lumber. The first 10 that I build will be numbered like the Limited Edition Work Tables, and here is the process documented for tables 1-5 (pictured below).

This is a shot of the underside of the top showing the reclaimed wood positioned for screws and gluing. Combining the wood and steel was an almost therapeutic exercise.

I love me some pocket holes!

This is the base. We like to keep things easy. Why add what is not needed?

First test fit. Looks like it works.

I won’t bore you with the overwhelmingly difficult finish work that takes place in order to achieve the following finish, just know that it’s a great deal of back breaking labor.
