Tántalo Hotel

For January, Destination Design hits Latin America, Panama City specifically, for a peek into the Tántalo Hotel. The property’s classic Panama City exterior gives way to a completely redesigned contemporary interior, compliments of Andrea Steele of AND Architects. Owned by New Yorkers, the property opened in February of 2012. Twelve local artists, using a variety of art mediums, created unique artworks in twelve different rooms.

What: Tántalo Hotel
Where: Corner of Calle 8a Este y Avenida B, Casco Viejo, Panama City, Panama
How much? $190-$280 per night
Highlights: Every room has a different artist harnessing a different type of artistic expression and theme in various mediums, including photography, graffiti art, and light boxes.
Design draw: Once a derelict collection of abandoned and graffiti-tagged buildings, Casco Viejo has undergone impressive revitalization. Its reputation is as the art and creative district of Panama, becoming the favored canvas for street art and other artistic expression. The area plays host to art festivals, shows, and public art demonstrations throughout the year.
