Domestic Selections by Nick Ross and Fraser Reid

Young, recent grads Nick Ross and Fraser Reid have collaborated on a new project called Domestic Selections.

The project was commissioned by Creative Scotland, an organization that promotes design and creativity of Scottish designers. The series of unique chairs, each altered from a set of identical archetypes, was inspired by the idea that each is made from the hand of man. I love this description of the project: “Unlike the design process nature cannot start from a blank canvas but instead must work with what already exists to try and develop improved variants in what is a constant development process. Nature contains no finished articles but instead is populated with passable ‘work in processes.'”

Here is the chair, untreated made from solid pine.

The chair coated in grey rubber

Dyed with layer upon layer of dark blue dye to create an almost black finish

Sanded and coated lightly in Carnauba wax

Upholstered in Bute fabric

Carved and dyed white
