Dwell on Design Exclusive House Tour: LivingHome, Santa Monica I

The second home on the Dwell on Design Prefab Home Tour is the LivingHome, Santa Monica I single-family residence designed by Ray Kappe. This is the first LivingHome that served as a model for their line of sustainable, modern, and modular homes. It’s a 2,480 square foot, four-bedroom house whose modules were built in a factory and were installed on site in 8.5 hours. 8.5 hours – can you believe it? Could you imagine going to work with nothing and coming home to a completely built house?

The home was also the first in the US to achieve LEED for Homes Platinum. Just taking a quick look at the house, it’s hard to believe it’s a prefab and with so many eco-friendly elements incorporated like radiant heating, grey water irrigation system, recycled denim insulation, and rain collection.

I love the openness of the second floor and how the walls slide to really open it up or close the rooms off for privacy.

We’re not attending Dwell on Design this year, but DoD was generous enough to photograph the homes on the tour exclusively for Design Milk. Make sure to check out all of the 2012 Dwell on Design house tours here.
