Another stop on the West Side Home Tour is the McKinley Residence located in Venice, California. If the house looks familiar it’s because it’s been featured a lot for its early ideas about green building, but also for being featured extensively in the TV series Californication. The house, with its Balinese vibe, was built by architect David Hertz for his own family as a test subject for sustainable building techniques.
Built in two phases, it now includes four two-story buildings that are linked via three indoor bridges.
I love the use of concrete and wood throughout. It’s warm yet remains modern. Most of the concrete is actually a lightweight concrete that uses 41% recycled content.
The buildings wrap around a courtyard that features a lap pool, a very cool lap pool.

We did not attend Dwell on Design this year, but DoD was generous enough to photograph the homes on the tour exclusively for Design Milk. Make sure to check out all of the 2012 Dwell on Design house tours here.
