Exclusive: Tanizaki Sake Set by Marc Thorpe for OTHR

This week’s OTHR design preview? Just in time for Japan’s Cherry Blossom season, it’s the Tanizaki Sake Set by architect and designer Marc Thorpe, in 3D Printed Porcelain.

This sake set is perfect for a single serving — one set per person.

Tanizaki was conceived as many parts working in tandem; unified by space, light and shadow, the flask and cup become one. Its playful character allows the sake set to hold its own, even among a bountiful spread of sushi.

Named for one of Japan’s most prolific novelists, this sake set is a meditation on Junichiro Tanizaki, whose works often explored cultural identity. The author’s commonly juxtaposed themes of “the West” and “Japanese tradition” find harmony in the set’s singular form.

Based in New York City, Marc Thorpe founded the eponymous design practice, Marc Thorpe Design (MTD) in 2005 after studying architecture from the Parsons School of Design. He practices multidisciplinary design and has taught at Parsons, Pratt, and NYU.
