Friday Five with Marc Kushner

Not only is architect Marc Kushner, AIA, co-founder and CEO of Architizer.com, which launched in 2009, he’s a partner at HWKN (Hollwich Kushner), a New York City-based design office. After graduating from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, Kushner went to work at J Mayer H Architects in Berlin and at Lewis Tsurumaki Lewis before co-founding his firm with Matthias Hollwich. While attending to Architizer, a site that let’s architecture and interior firms from around the world publish their work online, he teaches at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, and lectures about social media and architecture across the country. As if that isn’t enough, he’s on the boards of Storefront for Art and Architecture and Goods for Good. On May 15th, 2014, Kushner and Architizer’s A+ Awards gala will be celebrating the world’s best new architecture during NYCxDesign. Luckily for us, he took some time to share with us what keeps him inspired in this week’s Friday Five.

1. Juergen Mayer
He is my architectural mentor and one of my best friends. His swoopy shapes are the most adventurous, thought-provoking, and entertaining architecture being built today.

2. My watch
I really, really like my watch. It is a Dieter Rams Braun watch and it is like strapping a kitchen clock to your wrist.

3. Synagogue for the Arts
Hands down my favorite building in NYC. Tucked on quiet White Street in Tribeca, this funny little building levitates over the ground.

4. Bonsai
OK, I suck at Bonsai. But after killing quite a few specimens, I have found that Brazilian Umbrella Tree Bonsais are quite resilient and don’t mind living indoors. That said, I just killed one.

5. Copake
My husband and I rent a place in Copake NY for the summer and it has become hallowed ground for us. Open vistas and no one there, but most importantly a link to my past. My mom went to summer camp there for 15 years and used to regale us with tails from Camp Ferosdel. Love driving by the former summer camp and thinking of my mom as a little girl.
