Blik’s Friday Five is all about pizza… warning… do not read this on an empty stomach!

From Scott: Jerinne and I met in Chicago 17 years ago and one of the things we had in common was that we loved pizza – and making pizza from scratch. Although we don’t have time to make from scratch that often, we make a point of trying pizza wherever we go.

1. Pomo Pizzeria in Scottsdale, AZ
As much as we love Pizzeria Bianco in Phoenix, the 4 hour wait is an appetite killer. A great alternative, and potentially a better call is Pomo Pizzeria in Scottsdale for Neapolitan pizza. Less is more here so opt for the classic Margherita or the Bufala DOP.

2. Bettelli’s in Wilkes-Barre, PA
Scott grew up near Wilkes-Barre, PA and when we exhibited at the NY Gift Fair, we’d visit PA before or after the show. There are a lot of pizza places that are really amazing in this small town, but we both agree Bettelli’s is one of the best. They only make it a few days a week and they serve it as a “six cut tray” so the slices are square but still thin and crispy.

3. Saw Tooth Roadhouse in Hood River, OR
When we visit Jerinne’s family in the NW, we usually make a point of going to Saw Tooth. It was started by a family from NY and recently sold but the pizza is still good – and the scenic drive adds to the experience. You drive south of Hood River up the Mount Hood Highway with spectacular views of Mount Hood and Saw Tooth is this roadhouse right next to a lumber mill. You can fill your Growlers with your favorite Pac NW brew too.

4. Basic in San Diego, CA
We stumbled upon this place by accident. While looking for a place to eat in downtown San Diego, Scott’s mom pointed out a “pizza” sign on a cool old warehouse so we had to check it out. It’s a bar that only serves pizza and one awesome salad. The pizza is done in the Connecticut style, not having been to CT and taste tested pizza there, we can’t vouch for this but it’s great regardless. It’s a thin, circle pie, served in a square tray with a sheet of wax paper.

5. Nancy’s Pizza in Chicago, IL
Jerinne and I met in Chicago, the home of stuffed pizza. Nancy’s is the best and the fresh spinach pizza is the one we’re always craving. It’s a hole in the wall place on the north side and will fill you up right.
