Gaze by APOLLO Architects & Associates

Gaze is a minimalist house located in Aichi, Japan, designed by APOLLO Architects & Associates. The residence also serves as a gallery space for the contemporary art collection of the client. This building consists of a hybrid structure, with a podium on the first floor level composed of reinforced concrete, while wooden boxes occupy the upper levels above that are paneled with galvanized steel siding.

Each level occupies a larger floor area than the one beneath it, with the upper floor extending well beyond the first and second floors. In addition, the second level is cantilevered in order to allow for covered parking. Concrete partitions inside the space block direct sunlight, allowing visitors of the gallery to view the artwork without being distracted.

The interior finish and furniture of the family room is intentionally monotone, allowing this space to be converted from the living space into an alternative gallery space in the future to expand the art collection. The staircase and living area are illuminated by skylights to further promote privacy and the use of indirect sunlight.
