The Advent of the Functional Sculpture

Is it the lack of space of many modern outdoor spaces or is it new available technologies that have prompted designers to entirely rethink many classic or even basic outdoor items? Whatever the reason, the last 12 months have seen a massive emphasis on a new design trend. The deal is now to elevate basic functional must haves to the make them real features. To illustrate this new era, here are a few designs that can be classified as functional: they provide shade, light, or serve as planters but are so striking they have become features/sculptures in their own right.

Parasols were late in catching up with the changes in the outdoor design area. They have now bridged the gap. The leader of the revolution is certainly shade specialist Tuuci.

The brand brought to the market M1 Stingray, the first deliberate shade sculpture.

Italian brand 21st Livingart’s collection of lights/planters was at Maison et Objet, and it drew my attention because the booth was buzzing with captivated visitors discovering this new kid on the block. Kadabra (above) and Caprice (below) are two of their designs (available is white, orange, and green).

Serralunga, another Italian brand known  for providing a constant flow of creative surprises, developed “Swing-UP” with Aquilialberg. It’s an innovative versatile flower pot, pouf, and side-table in one. Pile them up and they create a superb totem-like sculpture.

So, when you set out to shop, take the art route even for the most basic functional must haves!
