Canadian product designer Kitmen Keung has created a modular hexagonal mat called Hexis that brings together the convenience of a coaster and a resting place for small utensils.
From the designer:
Hexis is a hexagonal mat that provides the ultimate unification of form and versatility whilst retaining an ideal balance between the two. The sleek silicone piece is multi-functional; bringing together the convenience of a coaster and a resting place for small utensils such as teaspoons and stir sticks in the form of an inwards sloping corner. This 3.6cm-wide secondary surface pulls utensils towards the carved slot much like a magnet.
The form is modest and geometric, allowing a seamless integration between the design, contemporary interior styling and architectural spaces. Merging two distinctly separate applications into one utensil is the result of careful observation, rationalisation and simplification of the interactions between the user, their environment and the object.

Hexis is currently a prototype, but if enough people express their interest, the designer will put it into production. It is available in white and charcoal gray.
