LDF 2011: ibride x Kelly McCallum at Lifestyle Bazaar

Stepping into Shoreditch’s Lifestyle Bazaar is always a treat, but for the London Design Festival, they’ve commissioned something extra special. Kelly McCallum has taken the ibride Junior Bookcase and turned it into a modern day curiosity cabinet.

At first playful and innocent, when you peer closer, the darker side of Kelly’s work reveals itself. It’s this constant juxtaposition between sweet and sinister that makes this piece so compelling.

Kelly graduated from RCA in 2006 having studied Goldsmithing. Her background is apparent in her interest in scale and attention to detail. A passion for story-telling, natural history and Victorian taxidermy are also in evident in her work.

Even the William Morris inspired wallpaper is gruesome on closer inspection.

This Victorian curiosity, clad in real cow skin, would once have sat in a butcher’s window. With taxidermy set to be a big trend at LDF this year, Kelly’s trademark gold maggots and new surroundings bring it up to date.
