Kaarsrecht Candleholders by Pascal Smelik

Pascal Smelik is a young designer from The Netherlands whose “Kaarsrecht” series of candleholders are based on candle wax. The idea cam from Smelik’s fascination with the concept of deformity. Deformity is generally associated with something ugly or anything negative, but Smelik wondered whether this is true because deformed natural elements such as a tree are often fascinating and beautiful.

Using candle wax, Smelik can create items out of the concept of deformity, and so far has made a series of glasses and a stool, and the newest additions to the collection: these bronze and aluminum candleholders, which will be exhibited at Object Rotterdam 2011 this month.
