Live-Work Studio in Texas by Intexure

Architects Russell and Rame Hruska, principals of Houston, Texas-based architecture firm Intexure worked for several years in a downtown warehouse loft until they decided it was time for a change. They found a vacant urban lot that was littered with garbage and decided that it would be the site for a new live-work studio.

The home is on the top floor with the workspaces on the ground floor. Many areas are designed for dual functionality to help serve the needs of both a family and an office. Outdoors, the architects designed a pavilion to serve as a gathering space that can accommodate up to 12 people. Also in the yard is a sand box and play area, garden, concrete bench seating and a water feature. An in-ground pond captures rainwater from the butterfly roof.

From the architects:

“It took a great deal of personal risk and sacrifice but has paid off with a building that represents our values”, says the couple. Furthering the process of revitalization, Intexure then developed a series of sustainable homes adjacent to the studio which balance the need for urban density with appropriate green space and areas for gathering. “What we are really seeking to do is not just design buildings but create a community” Intexure is based on the idea of interweaving all aspects such as site, context, culture, environment, landscape, and furnishings to create cohesive design solutions. The firm maintains a diverse portfolio project types; however all projects share a sensitivity to the site, their clients needs, sustainability, appropriate use of materials, and the relationship of time and place.
