Warm, Modern Home Full of Concrete and Wood Details

A husband and wife geologist nearing retirement actively working from home hired SHED Architecture & Design to design a single family home, dubbed Main Street House, for them in Seattle’s Leschi neighborhood. While it’s not on Main Street technically, they named it such because of the pedestrian path and unimproved right of way that flows along to the north of the home.

The site has a 20 foot slope from the top to the bottom, giving the couple partial views of Lake Washington, Leschi Park, and the surrounding landscape. They sloped part of the roof too to include an outdoor roof deck.

The couple wanted a home that had spaces that flowed from the inside out and that would “engage the site and surroundings while retaining a sense of refuge.”

Outdoor spaces extend out from the footprint of the house, increasing square footage.

I love how they combined a warm gray, horizontal siding with wood and concrete details.

Inside, the wood trim and details continue and are paired with white walls and ceilings.

They incorporated windows everywhere, including above the upper kitchen cabinets and in lieu of uppers on one wall of the kitchen.

They skipped the risers on the wooden stairs letting light pass through to keep it light and bright.
