Maria Janosko

Let me introduce a very great graphic designer and artist, Maria Janosko. Maria is currently pursuing a graphic design degree at the Academy of Art, San Francisco. In her spare time in between her busy schedule with interning and doing school work, she continues her passion in illustration and painting.

How would your define your work?

My work is an investigation of my environment. I like to take recognizable imagery and create an abstract environment, take it out of it’s context in efforts to more clearly describe my reality.

What inspires you?

I’m inspired by the hidden patterns in the environment. I’m fascinated by the fact that we are living in/on a natural environment and have been so relentless with carving paths and developing routines. It’s the intrigue and discovery of organic and man-made patterns/objects.

Are there any themes that you like to lean towards in your work?

I tend to create abstract landscapes or environments…even if I’m dealing with chairs flying through space! It’s my attempt to come to terms with how I see the world around me and how I interpret ideas of science and spirituality.

Could you elaborate on your creative process?

My work can start two ways. First, as with the chair series, I take a recognizable object: a chair, and I start to throw it around in a very abstract space (on the page). I let the composition evolve based on aesthetic choice but also a temperament. An arrangement can portray a quiet, calm voice or something a bit more immediate and alarming.

Second, with the new wood art series, I’m taking a much more organic approach with use of imagery. Maybe it’s influenced from the wood surface but my drawings evolve from a more meditative process of the repetition of pattern. I like the textures objects can create when repeated over and over and then when seen side by side. Usually then, an environment will appear and I’ll take direction from there.

What is your dream project?

My dream project…hmm. This is a tough one. I think my dream project would be to create a line of stationery/notebooks. I would love to marry my graphic design background with my art background and see what takes shape!
