MatterMade Collection Number Two

I tried to get to the opening of Matter‘s MatterMade Collection Number Two opening during ICFF but it was super packed. So I was happy to recently get info about the new collection in my inbox!

The collection, which is currently on display at the Matter NYC store, highlights new contemporary American design. There are two categories in the collection – the first is a hybrid of design and art and an experiment in materials. The second takes a look at more streamlined, commercial aspect of design.

Also, Matter has focused on the American aspect of the designs, making sure that the entire collection is produced domestically in the United States, with many items produced within a 100 mile radius of New York City.

Pictured above is the Adna Chaise by designer David Weeks, which we posted about earlier this year here.

Range Life by Jonah Takagi – I am in love with this table! The work takes its name from a song by the band Pavement off of their record “Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain,” and I hear more pieces are planned in this collection. I can’t wait!

Glacier by designer Paul Loebach is a series of organic tables that feel like chipped slate or obsidian.

Mette by Marc Ganzglass, made from marble and silicone bronze, relies on tension instead of hardware.

I’m a huge Lindsey Adelman fan, and her Ceres lights explore the intersection between the natural and the manmade. Made to look like branches of a tree, the glowing LED lights are connected with metal rods and joints.

Shed by Harry Allen is a storage cabinet that is reminiscent of the cedar shingles found on many houses in the Northeast US. Cedar is also a wood often used in closets to help preserve clothes and absorb moisture.

Windsor Settee by Christopher Specce is another piece that reinterprets a traditional piece.

Filament Wound Stool by Moorhead & Moorhead is a series of carbon-fiber stools made from 1 lb of fiber wrapped around the same mold in different patterns.

A-Shades by Bec Brittain are spun metal pendant lamps in various shapes treated with a mirrored copper finish.

HS1 by Henry Julier is a bookshelf in which the shelf supports on the sides also perform a bookend function.

Jaime Derringer, Founder + Executive Editor of Design Milk, is a Jersey girl living in SoCal. She dreams about funky, artistic jewelry + having enough free time to enjoy some of her favorite things—running, reading, making music, and drawing.
