A Modern Family Ranch in Texas

New York City-based Sara Story Design went south to design the interiors modern ranch retreat in the Texas Hill country, designed by Lake|Flato Architects. Dubbed SK Ranch, the project included a main house, guest retreat, pool house, and tennis pavilion that sit on 10 acres of rolling hills. While the location makes way for a typical ranch-style house, this project features a combination of modern and vintage furnishings, clean lines, and a truly stellar contemporary art collection.

Considering its surroundings, the house was built with massive blocks of Texas Lueders limestone that they mixed with steel and glass walls. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the green landscape and fill the house with sunlight.

The main living area has double-height ceilings making the open living and dining room feel quite grand.

That chandelier is truly stunning. It’s the Fragile Future chandelier by artists Lonneke Gordijn and Raph Nauta and it’s made of dandelion seed heads, concrete, and phosphorus bronze. It looks perfect in front of the surrealist painting by Tomasz Kowalski.

Besides the “great room”, the main house has an eat-in kitchen, six bedrooms, and a master suite.

I could live right here in the pool house. I mean, look at that peaceful view.

The master suite is located right off the great room and has perforated suede wall panels giving the room a lush feel. They also incorporated a 1970’s Eileen Gray Transat Chair. The painting is by Kati Heck.
