NYCxDesign 2015: Collective Design

2015 marks the third edition of Collective Design’s fair during NYCxDesign and this year it included a host of first-time exhibitors, established and emerging talent, as well as returning favorites from around the world. The focus was on design innovation and thinking from the beginning of the 20th century until today. Take a look at some of our favorite finds.

Collective15-1-FriedmanBenda-Misha-Kahn

NYC-based artist Misha Kahn displayed his quirky, colorful mirrors and sculptural lamp via the Friedman Benda booth, a New York gallery that represents Kahn.

Collective15-2-Ingo-Maurer

Collective Design showed a series of Ingo Maurer’s work as part of their 2015 Collective Influence exhibition. The Toto table lamps give nod to a certain cartoon mouse we’re all familiar with.

Collective15-3-Dana-Barnes

Dana Barnes showed a new series of seating called Endolith Casts, which combines concrete with random patches of knotted fibers that reference lichen.

Collective15-4-Wexler-Gallery-Kishimoto

Wexler Gallery presented Laura Kishimoto’s Yumi Chair II made from ash veneer that’s been manipulated into sculptural curves.

Collective15-5-Maison-Gerard

At the Maison Gerard booth, Ayala Serfaty’s wall-mounted lighting looks almost like wet leaves hanging down but it’s actually made from glass and a polymer membrane.

Collective15-6-Edith-Lundebrekke

Edith Lundebrekke had me walking back and forth to see how each of these wall sculptures changed depending on where you stand. Painted wooden slats are layered on a painted background for really cool 3D effects. Presented by Fuglen of Norway.

Collective15-7-Memphis-Milano-sottsass

The Bel Air armchair, by Peter Shire, was part of the Memphis Milano booth and was designed in 1982 in a menagerie of colorful fabrics.

Collective15-8-Material-Lust-kindermodern

kinder MODERN partnered with Material Lust on a new collection of children’s furniture that’s refreshingly dramatic in contrasting black and white, while at the same time being playful and functional.

Collective15-9-Ted-Noten-Purse

Conceptual designer Ted Noten’s Witness to a Crime is part of his acrylic bag series – this one contains a toy gun, a 24kt gold-plated gun-shaped cookie cutter, glow-in-the-dark liquid, and precious stones. Available at Ornamentum.

Collective15-10-Doug-Johnston

Part of Site Unseen OFFSITE’s pop-up at Collective, Doug Johnston had a collection of his ropework compendium pieces, including this one, Labyrinth from 2014.

Collective15-11-mimi-jung

Mimi Jung’s Black Interior is a circular space made of gradient black woven natural fibers and a steel frame.

Caroline Williamson is Editor-in-Chief of Design Milk. She has a BFA in photography from SCAD and can usually be found searching for vintage wares, doing New York Times crossword puzzles in pen, or reworking playlists on Spotify.
