Guy Keulemans researched online atheist groups and also the influence of religion on atheists. This large chest of drawers is the result of his research.
Shelves are hidden in the back of a chest of drawers, becoming a secret to be discovered; and superseding the secretive nature of drawers. This concept is positioned as a metaphor for the continual drive of atheists to uncover and expose the mysteries of science, religion and life.
Constructed from sustainably harvested bamboo with dovetail joinery, and little to no glue or nails were used. Castors allow the chest to be moved around easily.

You can read through the research and download Guy’s thesis from his research journal. This piece is currently on exhibition at the Design Academy Eindhoven Graduation Galleries 2009, through October 25th.

It’s so simple and very pretty. This would def be conversation starter and wouldn’t dominate the room. The knobs are great!

As an atheist myself, my only reaction to this is… what the hey?

i can’t think of a better way to take up the space of a wardrobe and provide the storage of a jewelery box

evan, I think that the idea is that most of the space is hidden at the back, but still usable. I think it an intriguing piece of furniture, and very beautiful.

Um… wouldn’t it be up against the wall, usually? How do you use the shelf space?

i agree with evan, this is mostly a waste of space, if its an “essay on atheism” its probably an insult more than a metaphor of discovery…
it fails as shelves and it fails as a drawer.
