Organelle Design

Organelle is a small, independent design studio based in Vancouver, BC, who have designed the Hangelier, a beautiful modern hanging lamp. The Hangeliers are created from tossed bike rims, and are beautiful in one or multiple arrangements. Organelle searches for found objects and other waste materials to use in their projects, whether one-offs or an entire line of artistic and eco-friendly items, such as the Hangeliers.

Hangers, ubiquitous and functional objects found in retail stores worldwide are re-purposed here to form the Hangelier. The hangers epitomize the “power of multiples” in design. One hanger is unexceptional, but 100 hangers create something spectacular. Separate research found that local bike shops throw out more than 30 bike rims and countless parts each week. The marriage of these two everyday objects worked out perfectly. Arraying the lightweight wood or plastic hangers on the rim allowed for a unique and yet referential form to develop while evenly spaced spoke holes on the rim made attachment and structural support easy. Although many Hangelliers have been produced, variation in bike parts ensures that each is unique while the material palette maintains consistency.
