Friday Five with Mila Hermanovski

Friday Five with Mila Hermanovski

This week’s Friday Five centers around the world of fashion. Dallas native Mila Hermanovski, who attended RISD for apparel design, has worked in many facets of the business. She started her career at Calvin Klein, worked at a trend forecasting publication, as a visual merchandiser on Fifth Avenue, and with Hollywood costume designers. That said, you may best know her as a contestant on Project Runway Season 7, on which she placed in the top 3 and showed at the Fall 2010 Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York City. You may have also caught her on an episode of Project Runway All Stars this month. Hermanovski launched her own label, M.I.L.A. for Spring 2011 and also designs a capsule collection called M|R|C created from vintage and re-purposed cashmere. Her Friday Five picks perfectly encapsulates her aesthetic.

This week I was inspired by our feathered friends, so I chose a few prints that took the oh-so-popular bird motif and put a fun spin on it.

California Roll House By Christopher Daniel

California Roll House By Christopher Daniel

The California Roll House is a futuristic concept design for a prefabricated house that Christopher Daniel of Violent Volumes has created. The house was designed with a desert setting in mind with its exterior wrapped in an energy-efficient material that reflects heat from the sun. The house appears rolled to form a tube-like shape with glass on either end that is controlled electronically to change the transparency for privacy and light control. The modular nature of the design makes for easy assembly and disassembly on site.

Get Out! WiFi Gas Fireplace

Are you cold? There’s an app for that.

Get Out! WiFi Gas Fireplace

Indoor/outdoor gas fireplace manufacturer Escea has just launched a new range of gas fireplaces that features the coolest thing ever: built-in WiFi connectivity. That means — you guessed it — the ability to control your fireplace with your smartphone.

This is actually something I’m very interested in for the Milk house because we have two drafty wood-burning fireplaces that could use some updating.

Things I Bought Recently

Things I Bought Recently

Let’s take a break from the kitchen project and talk about something equally as fun – shopping! For the past month, every day is like Christmas at our house. I’m pretty sure that Fab.com has my wallet held hostage and that the UPS and FedEx guys are ready to go on strike. Each day it seems that something arrives on our doorstep, so much so that our giant recycle trash bin has not been enough for all the cardboard shipping boxes.

I thought I’d share a sampling of stuff I recently bought for the house:

Things I Bought Recently

From top left, clockwise: Three Emeco 111 Navy Chairs for the kitchen to match my red one (this was a Mr. Design Milk decision), set of eight Fferrone water/wine glasses, a small wine rack for reds to place above the wine fridge, two counter stools for the kitchen island, Jim Flora print, Kumani ottoman (Mr. DM hates this but I love it), cowhide, Alexander Girard wood print, set of 12 graphic napkins from wolfum, two Gus*Modern Bishops tables in Macassar Ebony, and a set of nesting bowls. PHEW!

I also bought a sculpture, but after courting it for six months, it deserves its own post… so stay tuned.
