If you’re an HGTV or DIY Network fanatic, you must understand that the channel didn’t blossom out of nowhere. Long ago, Bob Vila and This Old House laid the groundwork for DIY as entertainment. Vila, who has spent his career helping people upgrade their homes (and lives), went on to present similar offshoot series, Bob Vila’s Home Again, Bob Vila, and Restore America with Bob Vila. His latest efforts include tackling the online world with his webisode pilot series Building Green. We’re lucky to say he’s the star of this week’s Friday Five.

Books you’ve read go on the “has been read” side and the new ones on the “will be read” side. This is a great way to make sure none of the books you haven’t read yet get lost in a sea of old books. If anything, it will serve as a reminder to crack open those new ones…

The Clap Your Hands Digital USB Camera might be one of the easiest cameras you will ever operate. From the looks of it, it appears to be just another fancy flash drive but it is actually a 2-megapixel camera that takes photos and videos.
No Wookiees were harmed in the making of this lamp.

Great things to People (gt2P) launched their Gudpaka Lamp this year at imm cologne. Made of alpaca hair woven onto alpaca felt and plywood, the lamp is a play of opposites: hard and soft, vegetable and animal, smooth and flat, digital and traditional manufacturing, and even North and South (in the Chilean materials used).

The versatile Netherlands-based architecture firm (with the best name ever), I Love Architecture, has designed an amazing interior by the name of Apartment Weteringschans. The layout of the space is split into a clean, grid-like structure. The kitchen island, which is a monolithic blog of marble and wood, serves as both the cooking and serving area.
