Pratt Students’ Bags Win Awards

Three students from the Pratt Institute in New York City won prizes for their innovative overnight bag designs in the 2011 Collab Student Design Competition, an annual event held in conjunction with the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Out of  115 projects from seven different design schools, Pratt’s Silvia Terhedebrugge and Elisa Boell won first and second prize respectively, and Jeannie Wu was awarded first honorable mention.

Students were asked to design an overnight bag that inspired fun and functional travel based on the museum’s exhibition Zaha Hadid: Form In Motion, which celebrates the artist’s work in the fields of urbanism, architecture and design.

Elisa Boell, also an exchange student from Germany, won second prize for her Urban Bundle, a modern version of the travel bundle. The design features a tube with three separate containers that store toiletries, make up, and personal belongings. It can be rolled up with the user’s clothing and secured with an elastic band. The design (sans tube) can also act as a pillow.

First runner-up, Jeanine Wu of San Francisco of class of 2012, was recognized for Amethyst, a crocheted accessory that helps make travel comfortable. It’s essentially a neck and back support system that holds hot and cold packs to further relieve neck and back pain. The design is accompanied by a shawl that also functions as a blanket.
