Residence in Cyprus by Vardastudio

This arc-shaped residence located in Cyprus was designed by Paphos-based Architecture practice Vardastudio, and was completed in 2009.

From the architects:

The residence was designed as an arc at the client’s request, who also wanted it built of fair face concrete. The plan is generated entirely of a circle. The circle is also used to organize the spaces, from the interior of the house, connecting the building’s form with circulation and layout of spaces, extending to outside spaces of the deck, and the pool expressing the center.

The house was finished to a high specification and maintains a clean and light feel inside. Warm tones were chosen for a lot of the finishes to contrast the coolness of the concrete, as can be seen on the projecting plywood casings of the windows and the warm marble flooring.

The solid concrete construction of the envelope provides a thermal mass which helps keep the heat out in the summer. The projecting window casings shade the glass from the summer sun and help keep the interior cool.

The design reflects the practice’s ethos, designing buildings with contemporary materials and forms, responding to each individual site’s and client’s character and demands, whilst drawing inspiration from local and vernacular architecture.
