Design Milk has partnered with Front Row Society for a really exciting scarf design challenge. Front Row Society is an online fashion brand that has monthly design contests on really cool themes. The designs are voted on and then the winner is made into a product to be sold around the world. Some of their retail partners have included Urban Outfitters, Nordstrom and Anthropologie.
Three winners will get $1,000, a percentage of sales and the opportunity to land in some fantastic retail shops around the world. You’ll also get a scarf of your very own design for yourself so you can show it off.
I was drawn to the unique design challenges that Front Row Society has put on before and I decided to come up with my very own creative challenge all based around the idea of 2D textures that you can “feel” that I call “Visceral Textures“:

Here’s the design brief:
The sand falling through your fingers. The rough edges of a generational table. The rust that’s built up on the hinges of an old nail. A cat’s tongue. Acupuncture.
Re-creating texture using a computer isn’t easy, but it’s your new challenge. Observe your environment and locate the formations in nature, find beauty and structure in micro cosmoses, or seek pattern in the man-made. But be sure it’s something that you can truly feel without touch. We’re asking you to use Photoshop to manipulate images to create a texture that evokes a visceral response… in other words, something you can immediately feel; an image that makes your touch senses react.
Anything goes. Be creative and dont hold back! Every object has a texture and depth, and we want you to bring it to life.
Get started designing and then head on over to Front Row Society to download the submissions package, submit your designs and read any requirements and rules. They’ll be accepting submissions starting February 5th. Then, voting will begin on February 20th. I can’t wait to see what you guys come up with – I’m sure it’s going to be amazing!

Is there any requirement regarding how many of the colors from the provided palette need to be included in the design? i.e 3 of the 7
Also are different hues/saturation of the same color acceptable? Thanks!

Hi Sarah! There is no requirement in terms of the number of colors. Just chose the colors from the color palette that fit best with your artwork.

I didn’t see anything in the rules stipulating the number of entries per person and clearly at least one person is submitting multiple designs? Is that all right, because it would be fun to do one or two more. Thanks!
