V23K16 by Pasel Künzel Architects is a winning competition entry for urban prototyping focusing on the needs of light and open air space. When I look at the architecture of this building, the first word that comes to mind is “ambient.”

The combination of layered woods with perforated metals is nothing new, but in the case of V23K16, the mixture is visually appealing, and quite stunning. The structure of the building is split into two sections; a strip divides the house into different zones for the various facilities: bathrooms, kitchen, stairs, and technical facilities.

The front facade is opened up to allow for ample light to penetrate the living spaces. The bedroom on the upper floor open up towards the sky, folding up the ceiling. The architects explain, “this bend allows for sunlight to penetrate deeply into the building during the day and enables the residents to directly look into the stars during night.”

The rooftop encompasses a garden that provides a nice landscape that overshadows the street. Overall, the structure has a beautiful layout, and truly defines a strategic use of light and open space.
