Solitaire Computer Game Playing Cards IRL

Back in 1990, designer Susan Kare worked on the original pixel art for the on-screen cards for Microsoft’s beloved Windows 3.0 Solitaire game. She used an IBM PC, Microsoft Paint, and the typical 16 VGA color palette available at that time, which resulted in a very basic pattern and the classic card deck-inspired design we came to know and love during lunch breaks and office down time…

For the game’s 25th anniversary, Areaware worked with Susan to release a real live card deck using her iconic design.

Now, you can procrastinate and pass the time by playing the online version of the offline game of Solitaire IRL. Meta.

(Fun fact: did you know that Susan Kare created some of the most iconic user interface designs in early computing? How about the original Macintosh trash can, lasso, and Finder Icon, just to name a few!)
