The “Real” Flaming Lips’ Bathroom

Do you remember the last Beat Boxed post I did a few weeks back with the Flaming Lips inspired bathroom? Well I was pretty sad when I found out I wouldn’t be seeing The Flaming Lips playing at this year’s Coachella. But I was ecstatic when I was contacted by FitzSimmons Architects, the masterminds and architects behind the renovation of The Flaming Lip’s Oklahoma residence featuring the “real” Flaming Lips inspired bathroom pod. This bathroom is just incredible! As Mr. Wayne Coyne says, “now you are entering into the, drug damaged, artist element of our home.”

Plus Wash Station

The design of this wash station considers the preservation of water in its design. Plus was designed by Bora Cakilkaya/P-ARCH and recently won 2nd place in the Green Dot Awards. P-ARCH aimed to create a product containing both sink and closet respecting the environment and eco-system. The station stores up the water used in the sink in the reservoir located under the sink, and after a semi-treatment process, is utilized it as drain water in the closet (toilet).

At the first glance, PLUS gives us messages of a different bathroom culture besides its function. The first thing coming to mind when mentioning about bathroom is the couple of sink and closed that we form on the wall surfaces. Due to this vicious cycle, we always see similar designs containing alterations only in their materials. We are in the opinion of that it is needed to lean upon different fictions, by leaving aside these concepts.

Jaw Dropping Design by i29 Interior Architects

This residence at the Singel, Amsterdam is yet another amazing project by i29 Interior Architects, one of my absolute favorite interior architecture firms. i29 is innovative in their approach, but they are able to keep their designs so simple by combining materials in such an awe inspiring way while maintaining an incredible sense of calmness. This design takes things one step further outside the box, or maybe I should say inside the walls. This space is made up of freestanding objects and interior volumes. Within the space you feel the openness, but the interior of the volumes feel very intimate. The kitchen and wardrobe are contained within one volume near the entrance. The burled walnut is so rich against the white epoxy floors and white walls. This space seriously takes my breath away!

My Holiday Wishlist: Annie

We don’t do gift guides here on Design Milk because, well, everyone does them. We like to be different. So we decided to go in another direction this year. Since our staff is getting larger, we thought it would be fun to ask each person what was on their wishlist this holiday season. So, every day for next 2 weeks we’ll feature a staff wishlist. Here’s what Annie’s list includes:

1. Linea Ice Oro at Gretel

Just because it’s beautiful, do I really need a better reason?!  Oh and because I’m obsessed with lighting!

3. Mushroom Nos Da Blanket at Gretel
I love a super soft blanket and I love pattern!  Also don’t know if my tiny radiator is going to keep me warm this winter.

4. Nomadic Wonderland by Eunsuk Hur

6. B14 Bathsystem by Boffi
Because a girl can dream, right?!

7. Alaskan Malamute puppy photo by Rigor & Samnooshka
It’s the cutest puppy in the world!  If you’re looking to adopt this holiday be sure to check your local shelters!

Really looking forward to snuggling with my new puppy on this “ultimate curl-up” sofa.  I swear he won’t chew on the legs!

Ty D.I.Y. Edition

ty-diy-edition-1

Customizable things like WordPress themes and color settings on TweetDeck are always nice. Grain, a design studio based in Washington, took that idea of customization and applied it the Ty D.I.Y. Edition, a shower curtain set that provides a blank shower curtain as a “canvas” where you can draw your own custom designs on. The shower curtain is durable, recyclable, machine-washable, and more resistant to mildew. Unlike other typical shower curtains, it isn’t made with PVC, a hazardous consumer material that releases poisonous chemicals.
