Miss Maple by Elisa Strozyk

Miss Maple by Elisa Strozyk

German designer Elisa Strozyk‘s Miss Maple lamp is made out of hundreds of wooden triangles that she has transformed into a flexible textile. Normally one thinks of wood as simply a hard material but she has created a material that she calls Wooden Textiles that are “half wood-half textile.” Even though this piece is made essentially from wood, it still remains delicate and sculptural. The spaces between the triangles emit a warm glow from the light inside. The shade is flexible giving you the option of shaping it three-dimensionally however you like it best.

Rhizome by Matali Crasset

Rhizome by Matali Crasset

Designed by Matali Crasset for Arturo Alvarez, Rhizome is a modern chandelier made from metal that resembles a mobile. Each arm branches out from a central spine and then repeats to create a contemporary effect. This is definitely one of those pieces I see that make me say “Wow. I want it.” I especially love the optional dab of yellow on the ends.

Trash Me Lamp by Victor Vetterlein

Trash Me Lamp by Victor Vetterlein

&Tradition‘s Victor Vetterlein-designed Trash Me Lamp is created from the paper pulp of 4-paper egg cartons that are spread over a mold and left to dry. The concept word behind the piece is “transient,” in that people’s attention and interest in things is somewhat brief. The lamp can be taken apart quickly and then recycled into something new once it is no longer desired.

Yo Yo Lamps by Almerich

Spanish lighting company Almerich puts the fun in functional with their Yo-Yo lamps that resemble (you guessed it) a child’s yo-yo. Available as a floor or hanging lamp, the red fabric-covered cable is close to 33 feet and rolls up between the two diffusers just like the string of a yo-yo.

Le Nuage by Wout Wessemius

Le Nuage by Wout Wessemius

Le Nuage is a suspended handmade light that resembles a cloud. Made from polyester wadding, each light is one of a kind with its own unique shape. Netherlands-based Wout Wessemius designed the piece to emit functional and ambient light with the use of energy-efficient bulbs. A plastic shell that diffuses light and creates variegated colors surrounds the light bulb to give the illusion that the sun is shining through the clouds.

CMYK Lamp by Dennis Parren

CMYK Lamp by Dennis Parren

Dutch designer Dennis Parren created the CMYK Lamp for his graduation show from Design Academy Eindhoven. The innovative design uses LED technology to project cyan, magenta, and yellow onto the ceiling and walls. The lamp is shaped like a graphic outline and casts 3D shadows which he discovered only by accident. The experimental lamp sets out to display the mystery of  light and what it can be.
