Nicole Dextras: Ice Typography and Green Words

Environmental multimedia artist Nicole Dextras uses elements of nature to create works that are often also sited in nature or the urban landscape. She’s constructed life size clothing out of flowers and leaves, and fashioned cultural messages from grass and ice. We love the crazy big text creations from her two series Ice Typography and Green Words.
Spazuk: Playing With Fire

Since 2001, French Canadian artist Steven Spazuk has been working with a technique he developed that allows him to use a flame from a candle or torch to create his paintings with the trails of soot that remain. He then uses tools to manipulate the soot left behind on the thick paper to develop breathtaking images. His work, which is mostly monochromatic, evolves as he is working and he allows the images to emerge naturally.

Brooklyn-based artist Daniel Arsham‘s first solo exhibition in Los Angeles, the fall, the ball, and the wall, will be on view at OHWOW Gallery, January 20th through February 16, 2012. The show will feature two- and three-dimensional works.
Harold Hollingsworth

I could easily see my house filled with Harold Hollingsworth’s large-scale paintings. The Seattle-based artist creates his abstract, mixed media work on canvas and panels. The mixed and matched layers are thoughtfully laid out, often times with various fonts and typographical elements. Each piece has a pop art feel that is playful and expressive and full of texture.
Aaron Wexler

Artist Aaron Wexler creates some truly stunning pieces of art, but these $1 book covers are my favorite. He’s carved out the book covers and revealed the cardboard innards, creating abstract and modern patterns.
Pencil Shaving Portraits by Kyle Bean

British artist Kyle Bean, best known for his intricate sculptures made out of unusual materials, has created a series of portraits from colored pencil shavings for the contributors page of Wallpaper* Handmade 2011.
Minjae Lee

It is hard not to be impressed by the young South Korean-born artist Minjae Lee. At just 22 years of age, he has amassed an impressive portfolio of colorful portrait illustrations created mostly with acrylic paint and markers. The dramatic pieces are full of pattern and texture that create the haunting imagery.
Color Codification Dot Drawings by Lauren DiCioccio

In her work, which scans a variety of mediums, including embroidery, found objects, and painting, Bay Area artist Lauren DiCioccio investigates the physical/tangible beauty of mass-produced media. As traditional media, especially newspapers and magazines, but even writing pads and office papers become obsolete, she wonders, “What will happen when we no longer touch information?”
Mike Perry
Editor’s note: Please welcome our new contributor, Caroline Williamson. Hooray! Learn more about Caroline on our About page.

Brooklyn-based artist and designer Mike Perry does many different things but his paintings are unforgettable. While all of his work is unusual and innovative, it still has enough commercial appeal for big name companies to constantly hire him. I love his use of geometric shapes and bright, bold colors achieved with different mediums. He has such an impressive body of work that it’s impossible to choose favorites.
