
I stumbled upon Australian artist Gemma Smith and her Tangle paintings via the Sarah Cottier Gallery. Upon further exploration, I was immediately drawn to both her large-scale paintings and translucent acrylic sculptures. Her abstract paintings and prism-like “boulders,” as she calls them, are both modern and mesmerizing. She combines bright bold colors, angles, and lines, all in an asymmetrical way. She plays with hard edges and soft curves that show her keen sense of spatial relationships.

Brooklyn-based artist and designer Mike Perry does many different things but his paintings are unforgettable. While all of his work is unusual and innovative, it still has enough commercial appeal for big name companies to constantly hire him. I love his use of geometric shapes and bright, bold colors achieved with different mediums. He has such an impressive body of work that it’s impossible to choose favorites.

UK-born Hong Kong-based artist Simon Birch makes paintings that I only wish I was talented enough to create. His giant, colorful brush strokes by themselves don’t look like they’d be able to form a complex portrait, but when it all comes together, the characters are alive and moving on canvas.

Artist Cayce Zavaglia considers herself a painter (she is formally trained in drawing and painting), but for the last ten years she’s been working on a series of portraits that are more works of embroidery. Atop a background of sanded and distressed acrylic, Zavaglia uses crewel wool to hand embroider the likenesses.
