Paintings by So Yoon Lym

So Yoon Lym‘s collection of paintings called The Dreamtime is like art within art — the unique art of hair braiding. I can’t believe these are paintings — they’re so detailed.

I spotted this chair painting at the Architectural Digest Home Show and it struck a chord. Entitled “A Chair Is Still A Chair…” by Mark Gleberzon, the work is part of an ongoing series of chair-themed paintings. Gleberzon explained that the first model he used for his chair series was a chair taken from his parents’ house about 20 years ago.
Mark says, “I realized over time that just as a chair is a supportive structure, my parents have been more than ‘supportive’ of my being an artist. My chair paintings are thus my most personal series of work. This particular painting has been further enhanced with the lyrics to the song ‘A House Is Not A Home,’ a classic written by Hal David with music by Burt Bacharach and most popularly sung by Dusty Springfield, Dionne Warwick and Luther Vandross.”

While at the Architectural Digest Home Show, I discovered the amazing artwork of Amy Genser. These mixed media relief pieces are made of rolled up paper and resemble an underwater reef. I can’t imagine how much time it takes to roll up all of those pieces of paper. Pictured above is “Float.”

Nils Voelker has created a series of light paintings called Variations on Pi. It’s an edition of 50 unique long exposure photographs of which each is based on a different range of consecutive decimal places of Pi.

This might be one of my favorite exhibitions of the year: Takashi Murakami at the Château de Versailles in France. The juxtaposition between Murakami’s colorful, trippy cartoon world and the traditional, rococo palace surroundings is remarkable.
This past weekend, Conny Dietzschold Gallery opened a new exhibit of works by Lisa Jones and Daniel Goettin.

Untitled acrylic, 2010
Lisa Jones is a UK artist living in Australia who reimagines medical imaging and photographs unusual objects from the everyday domestic world, juxtaposing them with images from the Antipodean natural world or the human skeleton.
